Using SquirrelMail
From Daily Data
SquirrelMail is a basic web based e-mail program. Designed for portability over pretty, it will work on almost any web browser and is specifically designed for slow network connections. While useful mainly for a "quick and dirty" way to check your e-mail when away from your home or office, many of our clients use it exclusively for its convenience.
You must set up your e-mail address
When you log into Squirrelmail for the first time, it doesn't know who you are. All e-mail you send will appear to come from a weird, not real address. To get around this, perform the following steps:
- Select Options on the top menu.
- Select Personal Information from the screen that comes up.
- Put your name in the Full Name field.
- Put your e-mail address in the E-mail Address field.
- Put your e-mail address again, in the Reply To.
- If you want, put something in the Signature field. This will show up on the bottom of all e-mails you send. If you do this, be sure and select "Yes" to both options at the bottom of the page under Signature Options.
- Click the Submit button in the lower right-hand corner.
- Selecting the Inbox (left side of screen) will return you to the normal view.
I don't see all my folders
If your account has been manually modified, or you have created folders using another application that does not conform to standards, one or more of your folders may not be be visible. You may not be "subscribed" to them. To Subscribe to your folders, perform the following:
- Select Folders from the top menu
- On the bottom right of the page, you will see a box containing all of your folders. If you do not, contact us at 214.827.2170.
- Select all of the folders in the box. You can select them one at a time, but on most computers, you can click the top folder, then hold the shift key and click the bottom folder.
- Click the Subscribe button.
- Click refresh folder list at the top of the page. Your folders should now show up on the left side.
- Select Options from the top of the page.
- Select Folder Preferences from the page that appears.
- Click on the dropdown next to the top item, Trash Folder, which says [Do not use Trash]. Find Inbox.Trash and select it.
- Click on the dropdown next to the top item, Drafts Folder, which says [Do not use Drafts]. Find Inbox.Drafts and select it.
- Click on the dropdown next to the top item, Sent Folder, which says [Do not use Sent]. Find Inbox.Sent and select it.
- Push the Submit button at the bottom of the page (you may have to scroll down).
- Selecting the Inbox (left side of screen) will return you to the normal view.
SquirrelMail Documenation
SquirrelMail is the Web Based e-mail reader supplied at Daily Data. Following is some documentation on its use.
SquirrelMail is a web based e-mail reader able to view IMAP e-mail boxes (see [setup_email.shtml E-Mail Documentation]). SquirrelMail allows you to do more than read and write e-mail, however. Additional plugins are available from the SquirrelMail web site and we have installed some of them. You are invited to visit the site and suggest additional plugins.
Current SquirrelMail plugins include:
- abook_take
Allows you to take an e-mail address from the current message and add it to your address book. Look for a button at the bottom of the page when you are viewing an e-mail. The location of the button can be changed using the Options - Display Preferences menu option. - calendar
There is a much better calendar but it is not currently available for this version of SquirrelMail. This calendar will allow you to keep track of your events. Please let the systems administrator know if you are using this plugin in order to be notified when the new calendar is available. - filters
Filters allow you to, based upon some criteria, immediately move e-mail from your inbox to another folder before you read it. So, for example, you could have filter rules that move all of one person's e-mail to their own mailbox. At that point, you will notice there are unread e-mails in that mailbox. Perfect for mailing lists, customers, etc... Set your filter rules from the Options - Message Filtering option. - folder sizes
This plugin allows you to generate a report on the number of messages and their total size in each folder of your mail directory. The more files and the larger they are, the slower the system runs when retrieving your e-mail. Use this to find the folders that need to be cleaned up. - fortune
This is just a cute function. Unix has a program named fortune that retrieves a saying, joke, something from a file stored on the computer. This plugin simply retrieves one of these "fortunes" and displays it each time you change screens, right below the menu on the page. Turn this on or off from the Options - Display Preferences menu option. - mail_fetch
You can set up information about one or more e-mail accounts you have in Remote POP server settings and when you select the "fetch" option, mail will be retrieved from that account. We have not set this up yet, so play with it at your own risk. Write us to be informed when we are ready to support this. - sent_subfolders
You can have separate subfolders under the Sent folder to sort when your outgoing e-mail was sent. Using the Options - Folder Preferences option you can select whether to store the outgoing e-mail in separate folders based upon the month, quarter or year they were sent. Note, this option takes effect for all e-mail after you have set the option, it does not move e-mail from the sent box that is already there. - squirrelspell
This is a simple spell checker. When you are creating an e-mail, one of the options at the top of the compose page is to check spelling. You can set up international dictionaries and maintain your personal dictionary from the menu option Options|SpellChecker Options - translate
This is a pretty rough implementation to allow you to translate pages in some foreign languages into English, or to transform your text into another language. You will need to set up which translation engine to use via the Options|Translation Options menu. Note that only a limited number of translators are available. If you would like a translation service added to the list, please contact us. - twc weather
twc weather allows you to view the weather in your area (and others) while reading e-mail. By simply going to Options | TWC Weather you can place a box under your folder that will contain current weather conditions, forecasts, and other information. - unsafe images
Some images are defined as "unsafe" in that accessing them can send important information about you to a third party without you realizing it. As such, SquirrelMail does not display these images but puts a message stating that the image is unsafe. However, under certain conditions, these types of images are from sites you know are ok. Unsafe image rules allows you to accept images from those sites. Before turning this feature on with Options | Unsafe Images, please read and understand the information at http://www.squirrelmail.org/wiki/UnsafeImages. If you have any questions about this, please contact us.
